History

Vaughan Inc began over 70 yr. ago as a 1 acre Cut Fern operation. Over the years it continued to grow in size, eventually covering over 50 acres in four locations. At that time all fern was shipped via Railway Express to over 3500 retail florists around the country. People initially would send in their standing orders on postcards with how much of each variety to ship each week or two weeks. If they needed to change their orders they would again send another post card with the revision.

Looking for something more hardy to ship because the Railway Express Agency was slowly degenerating, around 1957 Earl Vaughan switched production of the entire nursery over to Tropical Foliage, specializing in what was then a brand new item- Dish Gardens. Throughout the 1960's and 70's business grew till we served over 4500 retail florists and wholesalers with 6 trucks and 12 sales routes throughout the country.

At that time selection was easy- customers ordered their favorite dishes A through G! At Christmas we livened things up with a Brass dishgarden and even Norfolk Island Pines. Oh how simple those days seemed!

After the "Plant Boom" ended sometime in the late 70's we realized that our strength lay in production and not in distribution. There were already too many people engaged in running Plant Trucks into every little town and back road in the country, so we began to focus our efforts at the Supermarket industry. After several fits and starts we realized that this market needed new designs and ideas and the product we once sold to the retail florist would not do in this new marketplace. We overhauled our "look" and began to service Supermarket chains with high quality Dish Gardens for both Special Occasions and Everyday gift giving. And as they say - the rest is history!

We now serve over 90 % of the top Super market chains throughout the country and have relocated to modern facilities designed just for Dish Garden production. Located north of Orlando, Fl. We invite you to come to Sanford for a visit to our facility.
